Goonhavern Guide

Goonhavern, a small Cornish village just 3 miles from Perranporth beach, offers some fantastic cottages with hot tubs. The area sits perfectly between Cornwall's rugged north coast and the quieter south, making it an ideal base for exploring both.

According to TripAdvisor, the most popular nearby attractions include Perranporth Beach (4.5/5), Healey's Cornish Cyder Farm (4.5/5) and Lappa Valley Steam Railway (4.5/5). All are within a 15-minute drive.

Interestingly, author Winston Graham lived nearby and based his famous Poldark novels on this stretch of coastline. The dramatic landscapes you'll see featured in the BBC adaptation are right on your doorstep.

Cottages here range from cosy couples' retreats to large group properties sleeping 10+. Many feature private hot tubs, enclosed gardens and modern amenities. For something different, try the glamping pods at The Meadow - complete with hot tubs and countryside views.

Sightseeing

Goonhavern puts you in a prime spot for exploring Cornwall's best bits. Perranporth Beach is just 3 miles away - a massive stretch of golden sand with excellent surfing conditions and the UK's only bar actually on the beach (The Watering Hole).

Newquay (7 miles) offers attractions like Blue Reef Aquarium (4/5 TripAdvisor) and Newquay Zoo (4.5/5 TripAdvisor). Truro, Cornwall's only city, is 8 miles south with its impressive cathedral and cobbled streets.

Healey's Cornish Cyder Farm (TR4 9LW) is a must-visit just 2 miles from Goonhavern. Open 9am-5pm daily, you can tour the distillery, sample ciders and jams and meet the farm animals. Their tractor rides through the orchards are brilliant for kids.

For garden lovers, Trewithen Gardens (4.5/5 TripAdvisor) and The Lost Gardens of Heligan (4.5/5 TripAdvisor) are both under 30 minutes by car. We think they're at their best in spring when the camellias and rhododendrons bloom.

Pet Friendly

Many Goonhavern cottages welcome dogs, often with enclosed gardens where they can run freely. The village has excellent walking routes right from your doorstep - I recommend the old mineral tramways that criss-cross the area.

Perranporth Beach allows dogs year-round on certain sections, with the whole beach open to them from October to Easter. The dunes behind the beach offer miles of sandy paths for walkies.

The New Inn pub in Goonhavern (TR4 9QQ) welcomes dogs in the bar area and garden. They serve good pub grub and have water bowls for thirsty pups.

Healey's Cyder Farm is dog-friendly throughout most areas, including the café. Just keep them on leads around the farm animals. Their woodland walks are perfect for a leg-stretch before heading back to your hot tub cottage.

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Goonhavern

Lappa Valley Steam Railway (TR8 5PF) is fantastic for families. This miniature railway takes you through beautiful countryside to a leisure park with boating lake, crazy golf and play areas. Open 10am-4:30pm (February-November). One visitor called it "a magical day out" on TripAdvisor, with another noting "the kids didn't want to leave!"

Perranporth Beach deserves its reputation as one of Cornwall's best. Three miles of sand backed by dunes, with rock pools at low tide and consistent waves for surfing. The coastal path offers spectacular walks in both directions. A recent visitor wrote: "So much space even in August. The beach seems to go on forever."

Callestick Farm (TR4 9LL) makes award-winning Cornish ice cream just outside Goonhavern. Watch the production process, meet the cows, then sample from 30+ flavours. Their clotted cream flavour won Gold at the Taste of the West Awards. Open daily 11am-5pm. One visitor said: "The honeycomb ice cream changed my life!" A bit dramatic maybe, but it is really good.

Is Goonhavern good for families?

Yes! The flat terrain is pushchair-friendly and there are plenty of family attractions nearby. Lappa Valley, Dairyland Farm World and Newquay Zoo are all within 15 minutes' drive. Many cottages have enclosed gardens where kids can play safely while you enjoy the hot tub.

When's the best time to visit Goonhavern?

May-June offers warm weather without the summer crowds. September is also lovely - the sea is at its warmest and most attractions remain open. Winter stays can be magical too - nothing beats watching stormy seas from the clifftops then returning to your hot tub.

Can I get around without a car?

It's possible but challenging. The 587 bus connects Goonhavern to Truro and Newquay hourly. Taxis are available but can be scarce in peak season. For maximum flexibility, we recommend having a car to explore properly.

Where's the nearest supermarket?

Goonhavern Garden Centre has a small food shop for essentials. For bigger shops, there's a Tesco Superstore in Truro (8 miles) and a Sainsbury's in Newquay (7 miles). Both offer delivery to Goonhavern cottages if you book a slot.

Are there good places to eat in Goonhavern?

The New Inn pub serves hearty meals and Sunday roasts. For something special, The Plume of Feathers in nearby Mitchell (5 miles) offers excellent locally-sourced food. Perranporth has several good restaurants including The Shack for seafood and Willow Bistro for modern British cuisine.

What if it rains during my stay?

Cornwall has loads of wet-weather options! Try the Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay, Healey's Cyder Farm, or the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro. Of course, your cottage hot tub is perfect in any weather - rain adds to the experience!
